Thee Comic Column #93: The Fitzroy’s Kickstarter

In this age of social media information often ends up appearing as if by magick. Often I consume so much data via twitter, facebook, blogs, articles and emails that everything ends up running together into a big, translucent corridor of words and impressions that it is then hard to cull through for actual, useable fact. This is especially true of the independent world for films, comics, music – art in general. There is so much stuff bubbling around in the underground that sometimes it’s hard to hang onto it all. The Fitzroy is one thing though that I’ve had no trouble hanging onto since I first encountered it, as the sensibilities of its story, its visual style and its tone are something that my heart and soul tell me I have evidently been waiting for someone to create for a long time. And now someone has.

The Fitzroy is a kickstarter-funded, independent film written and directed by Andrew Harmer and produced by James Heath and Liam Garvo through Dresden Pictures. The film is a black comedy set in a post-apocalyptic, alternate 1950s. From the “about” page on the The Fitzroy’s website:

The world is covered in poisonous gas. The Fitzroy Hotel, a leaky submarine beached just off Margate, is the last refuge for a traditional summer holiday.”

The world Mr. Harmer has built here has obviously vast potential and in a truly fantastic idea he, James and Liam have developed a comic book to explore more of it. They’ve rounded up a slew of creators who have all contributed to the world of The Fitzroy and now the guys now conducting a Kickstarter to get the book funded and out there as a tactile book, and I for one am THRILLED. Watch the video below, then follow the link and if you can, contribute to this fine project.

Check back on The Fitzroy’s website for information pertaining to the release of the film and the comic! They both look exquisite!

Can’t find a comic shop? You can always use old reliable Comic Shop Locator at 1-800-COMIC-BOOK. Or you can take some of my recommendations. If you live in the greater Chicagoland area I recommend any of the wonderful four locations of Amazing Fantasy Books. In Los Angeles it’s The Comic Bug. Las Vegas it’s Alternate Reality Comics. San Francisco? Try the Isotope Comic Lounge and if you happen to venture a little further North I’d say you have to visit The Escapist Comic Book Store in Berkley (with the wonderful Dark Carnival Books next door and owned by the same folks). Read on!!!
