The Joup Friday Album – Christmas Edition

A World Lit Only by Yule Time Fire

I’d imagine it was with a smiling sense of irony that Amy tagged me for this christmas edition of The Joup Friday Album. It certainly was with that same sense of gleeful irony that I accepted the challenge. You see, although I am a devilish manifestation of the evil one, well, I can’t say that I do not, in some way, fall in for the cheer and good times of the holiday season. The bells, garland, trees and lights; buttered rum, santa slippers and stockings hung by the chimney with care. We never had that where I’m from, and although I remained steadfastly against it for the first few decades I spent on this Earthly plane, well, it won me over.

That said, the holiday has undoubtedly become co-opted by crass commercialism and corporate shilling as christianity dies a slow, rotting death in the eyes of the world and the population of this country in particular. For that I’m glad, mostly, however christmas is just not the same when it’s only about gifts. Despite my opposition to the ridiculous hullabaloo of the religion that birthed it, all the good stuff I find in the holiday is, unfortunately, directly linked to that insufferably two-faced opposing team.

Oh well, what can you do?

In choosing music special to the holiday then I thought I’d go two different directions. Or, if you prefer, to quote a friend, “I shall send you to heaven, before I send you to Hell!”

First up, my pick for one of the greatest christmas songs of all time. If you know it, sing along:

Doesn’t that just make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside?

Alright, now that we have that out of the way, let’s get to my choice for the christmas album. My choice may seem incongruous, but I assure you, it is not. Because despite the fact that Godflesh’s 2015 comeback album A World Lit Only By Fire is not a christmas album proper, as I mentioned above, the heart of christmas is god becoming flesh. And of course, Christmas eve much of the world will indeed be lit only by fire… places. So, you know…

Smores anyone?

Merry christmas!
