“September” by Cranes

Try as I might, I just can’t seem to get anyone to jump on the Cranes bandwagon with me.  And that’s a damn shame, because the British shoegaze band churned out a whole mess of stellar pop during their early/mid 90’s heyday.  Most complaints are generally lodged against the vocal stylings of Alison Shaw, a kind of childlike, high-pitched coo.  I’ll admit, it’s a lot to take in at first.  But repeated listening yields great reward.  She sounds like no one else.  Her voice fascinates me.

“Silver” by Jesu

There’s always that one song that serves as your entry point to an entire discography of any particular artist. The inciter. The catalyst. The first. That song can be wonderful and special in its own right, as it is the harbinger of music to come, but every so often it maintains. It keeps you carrying a torch for it. It stays firmly ranked among your favorites, never to be unseated by any other.

The Joup Friday Album: Slowdive – Pygmalion

slowdiveShoegaze is back!  So let’s talk about a legendary shoegaze act’s least stereotypically shoegazey album, an oddity amongst the band’s catalog, and one that led to them being dropped by their record label.
