Live from Squaresville: A SXSW Odyssey in Multiple Parts (Phase 5)

Gruff Rhys

Gruff Rhys

Okay.  It’s time to be honest with myself.  I am not as young or able bodied as i’d like to continue thinking I am.  These things happen.  I’m just so very, very tired.  SXSW has the upper hand now.  Whatever you do, don’t look at what’s in the box!

At one point, my body was built for abuse.  It was built for excess.  It was built to endure all of the poison and garbage I could cram into it.  And thus, a week of beer, and music, and beer, and friends, and beer, and hanging out, and beer was easily and happily taken on with vigor and the biggest of shit eating grins spread wide across my sun burned face.  It was right.  It was everything I am supposed to be.  And then I got older…and the beer does not sit idly in my belly as it once did.  I get it.  I’m not a superhero.

But I’m okay with that.  I saw Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals today!  And the French band La Femme was very enjoyable as well (a groovy mix of Stereolab-infused 60’s  pop, pretty, reverb guitar effects, and B-52’s new wave).

I’ve had my fill.  I don’t know if I can handle a full week of this next year.  But who knows?  Maybe I’ll think differently after tomorrow night (Ty Segall!), and I’ll revive and reanimate this fat and hairy corpse into something that’s a rock and roll machine once again.  Maybe I’ll start hitting the gym on a regular basis, and turn this bag of sweat and flesh into a temple, a sculpted Adonis.  Maybe I need to train.  Maybe I can do this.  Maybe you can too.

I am Iggy Pop!

Some things I missed today:

-Fucked Up

-the Twinkie and Ding-Dong people handing out their delicious wares

-someone throwing up on Lady Gaga (as performance art)

-Tyler, The Creator inciting a riot at the Scoot Inn (though that may have been yesterday…so tired)

-Trust (there was some kind of tampon emergency outside of the venue we were at, and all of the women I was hanging out with today jumped on that shit like the fucking Avengers)

-anything you can think of (my experience at SXSW has always been that you will enjoy yourself more if you just accept that fact that regardless of where you go, regardless of what you do, regardless of who  you see, you are going to miss something awesome)

And so, I have one more day of music and mayhem to cram in before it’s back to the real world, back to reality, back to the grind.  May all your days off be heavenly.
