The Joup Friday Album: Priests- Bodies and Control and Money and Power

Priests“I went to college, I got a job, but i still can’t figure out how to join the mob!”

The quote above is from the album closer of Priests debut record Bodies and Control Money and Power “And Breeding”. Everything about the sentence above is brash, funny and exciting all of which are perfect words to describe this record as a whole. Through Bodies and Control’s eight tracks, Priests take us through a sarcastic and pissed off sonic assault; the songs are fast, the playing a tad rudimentary, the lyrical content touching the basses of being confused with life, wanting to take on authority of any kind, hating the ideas of settling down and having children. Y’know the main qualities required for a really great punk rock record, and Priests take these qualities and uses them in a way that while being tried and true for it’s genre, feels like a breath of fresh air and revleatory too.

Showcasing an obvious love and influence of now classic “Riot Grrl” punk acts; Priests attempt to and succeed in paying loving homage to their idols in a way that doesn’t come off as lip service to what probably influenced this four piece the most as musicians. The snarling guitar line on “Doctor” and the warbling bass playing on “Right Wing” sound ripped straight out of the Corrin Tucker/ Carrie Brownstein (Sleater-Kinney) playbook, and a vocal performance that pays a lot of respect to Kathleen Hannah (Bikini Kill, Le Tigre)  The absolutely bonkers vocal performance by Priests singer Katie Alice Greer is more than worthy of being of note. Throughout the entire record you can feel Greer throwing herself about literally and figuratively with every performance she gives. Whether it be a roaring howl or a light croon every move she makes vocally leads to awe whether you’re hearing this band for the first time or the hundredth. It’s a force within itself that gives the ferocity of the music being played a punctuation mark. Turn this on and play it loud.
