Drinking, Fighting, F*&king, and Crying

The Cure - Boys Don't CryAdmittedly, this one may be a little bit on the nose. How could I resist though?

In the pantheon of songs by The Cure that make me cry – and there are quite a few of their songs, and several of their entire albums that have this effect on me – Boys Don’t Cry isn’t one of them. That said, this song does act as a bit of a primer for The Cure’s work. Arriving very early in their career, before Robert, Simon and the boys’ really heavily emotional work even began to flow (in my opinion), Boys Don’t Cry kind of lets you know what you are in for. A mission statement if you will. Because that’s what The Cure did, maybe better than any other band for a few years in the 80s – they cried. When I think about it, The Cure may be the embodiment of this little column I do once a week. They drink (watch their videos – they’re all hammered all the time, and thanks to fellow Jouper Amy for that insight), they Fight (Fight is the name of one of their songs on Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me), they f**k (you can also see Kiss Me squared for some of that as well), and they Cry, as evidenced here, where Robert Smith is telling you, he cries. But he doesn’t. But he does.

Oh how Robert Smith cries.
