Searching for multicultural literature in this global society ought to be easy. There are millions of books on Amazon and Barnes & Noble, not to mention 142 million books in the Library of Congress. Also, with the growing number of authors who write for children, finding multicultural literature for adolescents ought to be easy as well. Then why do I feel like salmon swimming upstream?

Why is it important to read books from different countries and cultures?

The Horror Movie Work Week Bonus: International Film #2 : Shutter 2004 (Thai)

Official Movie Image of Shutter

So I couldn’t let Bakes have all the movie going fun. This month provided his wealth of knowledge into the horror film realm with four installments of his “Horror Movie Work Week.” Find them here: Week 1, Week 2, Week 3 and Halloween Night Addition #4. Bakes, you covered a lot of film…A LOT. So I’ll just dabble in your area of expertise (as I often like to do in other topics as well) and put a spin on it in our first crossover column. So my pick for the month (well it’s November 1st so celebrate The Day of the Dead) is the Thai film Shutter directed by Banjong Pisanthanakun and Parkpoom Wongpoom. When in Thailand…get spooked by the Thai.

Phuket, Thailand – Firewalkers, facial piercings, fireworks and acrobats. How could one know that being a vegetarian could be so exciting? At least the Chinese-Thais in Phuket make it so during their annual Vegetarian Festival in the ninth month of their calendar year. This year of the dragon provided no disappointments in the festival either. The fest takes place the second to third week in October with the dates in this Roman Calendar year being 10th-23rd. Arriving in Phuket for the last five days and six nights provided insight into the ritual, photo ops to drool over, memories to last a lifetime and the desire to come back for more.

The U.S. Department of Education is in a state of flux-again. They are in the process of adapting the Common Core Standards. In the past each state taught its own standards, and while many standards overlapped, no two states had the same educational objectives. The Core Standards will unite educators in this country like never before. Every teacher will speak the same language, teach to the same standards and encounter similar struggles. How we do like sameness in the USA.

Ao Nang, Thailand – The beauty of the internet is ability to watch live feeds (C-Span) as events happen and interact within forums like Twitter from all over the world. Like the 2012 Presidential debate between President Barrack Obama and Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney. Of course there is bias but you try to set the aside.
As I write I realize I’ll have my own bias so I’ll play it as such. But in the fact of acknowledging points rather then personal opinion.
