“See My Baby Jive” by Wizzard

One day, I heard some random old song on satellite radio.

The next day, I went out and purchased a copy of said song.

The day after that, said song was the only thing in the world I wanted to listen to.

The Joup Friday Album: chipmunkson16speed – Sludgefest

chipmunkson16speedWhen I was a kid, I loved big, dumb popcorn movies just like everybody else, taking in weekend matinees of whatever mass appeal schlock-fest Hollywood happened to grace us with on a weekly basis. As I got older though, my tastes grew more refined, first taking in quality genre fare, and then moving on to the critical darlings. Then I went to film school, and my screen tastes began to get even more challenging. Foreign films, experimental movies, classics, and all manner of independent and cerebral art. In short, I gradually became a film snob.

I’m just one more voice screaming into the abyss.

Some days, I’ll be scanning through my Facebook or Twitter feeds, and as the constant and seemingly endless stream of status updates and selfies and shared articles and political rhetoric, the likes and dislikes and misinformation and click bait stack up like garbage piles infinitum on my eyes and brain, I’ll come to the gradual realization that I hate everybody I know. I have been writing this column for a while now, and it’s come as kind of surprise to me how many “favorite” songs I have. They keep coming to me week after week, seemingly with no end in sight. That being said, I sometimes feel like I’m repeating myself, some articles being bathed in a loving, nostalgic hue, others focused on a more cultural significance, and some just meandering off into their own inconsequential tangents.
